Any progress on the E-ILS, E-DME, E-HSI front?

I have to pay an absolute fortune for ILS approaches (17 quid at one 12 quid but 40 quid minimum invoice charge at another) for IMC training.

I've already been using AM radio stations for ADF practice ADF approaches and then switch to the real thing pre exam.

I would very much like to use the E-ILS feature on skydemon to do the same and keep training costs reasonable.

When we have something to announce on the E-ILS front, we will do so in this thread. For the moment it's by no means certain that it will ever make it into the product due to legal issues. It certainly won't be in the forthcoming major version, most of the improvements in which are on the planning side.

Sadly I was expecting this might be the case. However would it be possible to have a bog standard HSI implementation with out the glide slope. And while I'm asking for the world what about a ADF display as well.

We definitely plan to ship the HSI instrument at some point, but since the current work in progress is mainly focused on Plan, it might have to wait until the version afterwards.

I've just read on anther forum that it is possible to shoot ILS approaches on a Gamin 296. However it disengages at 500 feet.

Although not as good as a unrestricted implementation would this be something that you might be happy to releaser?

I have been using the same (i.e. ILS approaches) with pilotIII for over 10 years. Monochrome but satisfactory. I am sure it would look nice in SD especially with good size screen. PilotIII screen is only about 3.4 inches.

Very Newbytheway

I can announce that the next version of SkyDemon, 2.1, will have an instruments display. You will be able to switch between a primarily-map display (identical to the current version) and a primarily-instruments display with a horizontal situation indicator being the focal point.

Ideas for the layout of the instruments mode, including what instruments should be shown, are appreciated. At the moment we have the HSI, altitude and speed tickertape displays and distance/time to next/end/threshold displays.

When on final approach to a runway, the horizontal situation indicator changes to pseudo-ILS mode with both horizontal and vertical crosshairs. The glideslope part cancels when less than 500ft AAL. This pseudo-ILS mode is designed to help people engaged in instrument flying training.

Thanks Tim - sounds very usefull.

Bathman - if you're concerned about costs with regard to learning procedures for ILS/VOR/NDB etc approaches I'd strongly recommend RANT XL. I used this for IMC, FAA IR, and FAA to JAA IR conversion (as well as for ongoing training for NDB holds and approaches).

It will allow you to set different winds and really understand the instruments and what they tell you which will save an unbelievable amount of money if you then just need to apply this knowledge to flying.

The key to instrument training is to be able to fly well (hold heading/altitude etc), understand instruments and approaches and procedures from a logical point of view (RANT XL) and then putting it all together with the flying....

Hi there,

I'd also like a feature such as this.  As a VFR w/IMC pilot I do most navigation through visual fixes and using VOR/ADF/DME etc.

The instrument presentation on SkyDemon is excellent, and I especially like the colour-coding of required track so you can turn until the compass rose matches the required heading.  I don't think the software needs to go as far as having a fully-fledged virtual panel like the Garmins because of the current presentation being more than sufficient.  I do, however, feel that the flying of descents could do with an extra instrument, as could the glideslope.  The virtual radar screen on my 4.3" HTC HD2 is way too small if trying to follow a glideslope on a visual approach and sometimes the glideslope doesn't show up at all.

I think an overlay instrument could be toggled on or off that puts a line across the middle of the screen representing the aircraft and a moving line showing the descent profile/glideslope would make the software complete.  Much like an ILS approach, however one that could be toggled on or off at any time and thus used for descents or climbs.  If overlaying the map with lines isn't an option, perhaps temporarily switching from the map to the instrument for a virtual ILS or four virtual red/white runway lights on the screen somewhere would be better.  Perhaps for cruise descents a descent rate display would be good, too i.e. 'Commence descent at 300ft/min'.

I know Garmin boast a '5hz' GPS update rate.  Is this just a sales gimmick, or would the update speed of cheap PND devices hacked by Inflight users not be sufficient for instruments such as this?

I know this isn't the forum for queries, but I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.  Next to the altitude instrument there is a little triangle and I've noticed it changes colour.  What's this for?  I've tried tapping it but it doesn't seem to do anything.  Also adding on to this, could we have a display of fix accuracy as well?  It would be very interesting to know how many metres our fix is accurate to and how often the position is updated.

Great software, love the free updates and the unrivaled support.

Ignore my stupid pointless post in the other thread... This is exactly what I was getting at and somehow managed to miss this thread.  Apologies!  I would like a suggested descent rate etc. though, and am still wondering what the little triangle(s) are for!

Unless you manage to make more than one significant correction to your flight controls every second, I would question how beneficial a GPS chipset update of more than 1hz is. I wonder how fast they think the average pilot's instrument scan rate is.
